Candy Review: Allie’s Edibles Gourmet Crispy Rice

allie's gourmet crispy rice

These treats make me selfish. I shared them with my roommates because I wanted their opinions for the review, but make no mistake, I resented it.

I open one of the packages of Allie’s Edibles Gourmet Crispy Rice treats and I’m overcome with the sweet smell of nostalgia wafted to my nose. It’s surprising how many of my childhood memories involve delicious foods (rubs belly and whispers “memories”). Rice crispy treats were and still are one of my favorites. We even grew up calling them “Rice Crispy Candy”. Adventurous as always, my Mom had coined a new name for them. It was only later as an adult that I realized this was not their proper name – to my embarrassment.

My point? I love rice crispy treats. A lot. So I was both excited and skeptical trying these gourmet treats. Store-bought rice crispy treats are generally gross, but I was hopeful. I had four large bricks of delicious waiting for me: chocolate peanut butter, chocolate butter nut toffee, chocolate caramel, and chocolate pretzel. Overall, I liked them all to varying degrees. The caramel one was the closest to what you would expect a traditional rice crispy treat to taste like. It was moist and a bit gooey. It smelled fantastic as if it had just come out of the kitchen. It was very sweet and reminded me of Mom’s “rice crispy candy”.

The others were much more dry, but I’m okay with that because I liked the light texture. It was indulgent, but not dirty feeling. The peanut butter one would be my second choice as it was reminiscent of a peanut butter cookie. The chocolate on top of all these seemed more like a design element than a flavor enhancer. There wasn’t much of a chocolate taste, but it did make them *look* more tasty.

The pretzel treat was the exception to the chocolate rule. The chocolate, hint of salt from the pretzels, and marshmallow-covered crispy rice combination seemed to fit together as if it had occurred in nature. Had there not been chocolate, something would have seemed amiss. It’s great for a salty/sweet craving.

I was underwhelmed with the butter nut toffee treat. I felt a bit like- eh, I’m going to eat it, but I’d rather have a different flavor. I generally like toffee and things that contain toffee. I think I would have liked it more if it retained the crunch of toffee. I tasted it, but didn’t feel it and I felt it lacked a contrasting texture that I must have been expecting and would have appreciated.

All in all, I wouldn’t turn my nose if offered these and could see myself buying the caramel or peanut butter treats. They are definitely comfort sweets-I felt cozy and happy eating them. And what’s better is that with Allie’s Edibles Gourmet Crispy Rice, you get the homemade taste without the work!
